Difference between Cashmere and Pashmina

Published Date: 2017-07-27

There's slim difference between cashmere and Pashmina, otherwise, both terms mean the same thing. If you are a first-time buyer, it might be difficult for you to identify the difference, since the source of both products is the same: the Cashmere goat. But, to be precise, there used to be quite a difference between these products in the past; but nowadays both of them are pretty similar. The word Cashmere is popular in the Western Country. Derived from the word "pashm", Pashmina is the name that local people use. "Pashm" is the fiber produced from the Chyangra—the mountain goat. No harm is done to the goat. The furs are combed, cleaned and weaved. Pashmina is higher in quality than cashmere.
Cashmere is the fiber obtained from Cashmere Goat, the name often representing the Kashmir of India. Cashmere is soft to touch, durable, light and fine in texture. Cashmere products are made from the fine undercoat of Cashmere goat. Especially, the hair is obtained from the neck of the goat. In Nepal, producing pashmina product follows traditional method. Weaving pashmina has been a popular skill since the ancient time. But, the production of pashmina products wasn't commercial and had limited market area. But, as the product got national and international recognition, craftsmen started producing it commercially.
Raring Chyangra is a traditional means of livelihood in the mountainous region of Nepal. Pashmina from Nepal is considered the finest product in Nepal. The cashmere from Nepal is also known as Chyangra Pashmina. Pure pashmina cannot tolerate high tension; thus, most of the pashmina products are produced with the blend of 30% of silk and 70% of pashmina. Cashmere is widely produced other countries such as Iran, China, Turkey, Mongolia, Afghanistan, etc. Pashmina is the product mostly produced in India, Pakistan, and Nepal. The fiber of cashmere is little rougher than pashmina. For this reason, pashmina is considered the perfect fiber for light clothing.
