Cashmere, otherwise known as the 'diamond fibre', originates from the delicate undercoat of the Cashmere goat, which survives in the harsh climates of Mongolia and other parts of Asia. The sobering winter conditions cause these goats to produce a thick, warm undercoat, which is carefully combed by hand to harvest the valuable cashmere wool.
Despite its lightweight feel, cashmere is up to 8 times warmer than lambswool and far softer, leading to a higher price tag. The resulting garments, however, are worth the investment, not just for their durability, but for their unparalleled comfort and elegance.
Beyond its versatility and aesthetic appeal, one of the reasons why cashmere holds such value is due to the intensive labour and time, which takes about a year to collect enough fibres for one single jumper. This guide explores everything you need to know about cashmere, and why it's hailed as the king of natural textiles.
