Building the Development Brief

A precise brief aligns creative intent, technical requirements, commercial targets and timing before sampling begins.

Define the product before sampling

A useful development brief establishes the product category, wearer, season, intended use, silhouette, fit direction, yarn preference, gauge, colour, target quantity, target FOB and required delivery window.

References may include sketches, photographs, measurement charts, existing garments or material swatches. Each reference should state what is being communicated—fit, proportion, construction, handfeel, colour or overall direction.

Separate fixed requirements from open decisions

Mandatory requirements should be distinguished from areas where the manufacturer may propose alternatives. This allows technical development to improve feasibility without unintentionally changing the design intent.

Open points should have an owner and decision date. Material availability, minimum yarn quantities, sampling implications and commercial constraints should be identified before they become production delays.

A strong development brief converts creative intent into decisions that can be sampled, measured, costed and repeated.

Release one controlled brief

The approved brief becomes the starting reference for swatching, yarn allocation and prototype development. Revisions should be dated and version-controlled so design, technical and production teams work from the same current instruction.

Practical considerations

  • Define the intended result before execution.
  • Consolidate comments through one current document.
  • Confirm material, cost and timing implications.
  • Mark approvals and pending items clearly.
  • Retain the final physical and digital references.
