Cashmere begins far from the finished garment. Its journey passes through fibre collection, sorting, dehairing, spinning, design, knitting, washing, linking and inspection.

At every stage, material quality and human judgement determine what the final piece will become.

CHAPTER 01

The Origin

Cashmere begins in high-altitude regions where goats develop a fine insulating undercoat against severe seasonal temperatures.

The fibre grows beneath the coarser guard hair and is valued for its warmth relative to weight, its softness and its ability to create refined knitted structures.

Origin alone does not determine quality. Climate, animal care, fibre selection, sorting and processing all influence the material that reaches the spinner.

CHAPTER 02

The Cashmere Goat

The goat produces two distinct coats: a protective outer layer and the fine down used for cashmere.

The usable fibre is the soft undercoat. Coarse guard hair must be removed through careful sorting and dehairing.

Fibre diameter, staple length, colour, crimp and cleanliness vary between animals and regions, making raw-material selection a decisive first step.

CHAPTER 03

Seasonal Fibre Collection

Cashmere is collected during the natural shedding season, when the winter undercoat loosens.

Depending on local practice, fibre may be combed or gathered through controlled collection methods. The objective is to preserve usable length while minimizing contamination and coarse hair.

Careful collection supports better spinning performance and a more stable finished surface.

CHAPTER 04

Sorting and Dehairing

Raw fibre must be separated by quality, colour and length before it can become luxury yarn.

Sorting removes visible contamination and groups fibres according to their potential use. Dehairing then separates the fine down from coarse guard hair.

This stage has a direct effect on skin comfort, yarn evenness and the clarity of the finished knit.

CHAPTER 05

Luxury Spinning

The selected fibre is opened, blended and spun into yarn with a controlled relationship between count, twist and ply.

Spinning defines whether the yarn will feel lofty, clean, compact, brushed or fluid. The same fibre can produce very different results depending on construction.

Count and ply must be chosen in relation to gauge, stitch structure, target weight and finishing.

CHAPTER 06

Yarn Engineering

A yarn article becomes commercially useful only when its behaviour is understood through swatching and washing.

Technical assessment includes count accuracy, twist balance, stitch definition, growth, shrinkage, recovery and surface stability.

Colour, lot continuity, certification scope and availability must also be confirmed before a production calendar is fixed.

CHAPTER 07

Design Development

Design translates material potential into proportion, silhouette, stitch and garment function.

Cashmere may be used for fine layering, structured cardigans, sculptural cables, dresses, outerwear and accessories.

Each direction requires a deliberate relationship between yarn, gauge, density, construction and handfeel.

CHAPTER 08

Knitting

The approved yarn and structure are engineered into garment panels or fully fashioned shapes.

Machine gauge, stitch length, number of ends and tension influence weight, drape and dimensional stability.

First-off panels are checked before bulk so measurements and surface character remain aligned with the approved reference.

CHAPTER 09

Washing and Finishing

Cashmere develops its final hand through a measured finishing process.

Washing releases bloom, softens the surface and stabilizes the structure. Temperature, time, chemistry, movement and drying must be controlled.

Excessive finishing may create immediate softness but reduce stitch clarity and long-term surface integrity.

CHAPTER 10

Linking and Assembly

Panels are joined with precision so seams support comfort, movement and clean internal construction.

Linking quality affects shoulder balance, neckline shape, armhole comfort and the overall refinement of the garment.

Loose ends, seam tension and alignment are checked before the garment moves to final finishing.

CHAPTER 11

Quality Inspection

The finished piece is measured, examined and compared with the approved standard.

Inspection covers workmanship, measurements, shade, handfeel, labels, packaging and visual consistency.

Kanchan Cashmere applies an AQL 2.5 quality benchmark to production batches, supported by in-process and final controls.

CHAPTER 12

The Finished Garment

The journey ends with a garment whose quality is visible in proportion, touch, construction and restraint.

A refined cashmere piece should feel coherent: the fibre, yarn, stitch, silhouette and finish should work together rather than compete.

The final garment carries the accumulated decisions of every stage that came before it.

The quietest luxury is often the result of the most disciplined work.
